Opened October 30, 2004, the Cupertino Library is a 54,000 sq. ft. building on two floors, featuring a central courtyard that brings natural light into both levels of the library and a 16 ft. 3,240-gallon salt-water aquarium that was a gift to the city and to the library by the Fred and Annie Chan family. The library’s collection of 367,000 volumes includes books, magazines, compact discs, DVDs, Blu-rays, audiobooks, and downloadable eBooks and eAudiobooks. The library also has an automated materials handling system for returns with optional receipts.
Cupertino Library consistently has the highest circulation among the members of the Santa Clara County Library District. The calendar year 2018 statistics show Cupertino Library with an annual circulation of over 2.5 million items and more than 891,000 visits. The library offers a web catalog with access from home or work, as well as apps that are compatible with both iOS and Android devices. Terminals in the library provide internet access and to a large number of databases. Santa Clara County Library District’s home page address is www.sccl.org. Wireless access is also available during library open hours. Renewals for most materials can be done online or by phone by calling (800) 471-0991.
The Cupertino Library presents a wide variety of programs for adults and children of all ages. Programs include children’s Storytimes, a weekly ESL conversation club, Summer Reading Programs for adults, teens and children, and eBook assistance by appointment. Starting in 2018, Cupertino Library offers passport acceptance service by appointment. Those wishing to apply for first-time passports, as well as select renewals, can book an appointment online at www.sccl.org/passport.
A large number of Cupertino Library programs are generously sponsored by the Friends of the Cupertino Library and the Cupertino Library Foundation. The Friends of the Cupertino Library is a volunteer organization that presents three used book sales per year, the proceeds of which go to support the Cupertino Library.
